The job of a growth lead

A growth lead is not a second account manager. The role is to decide the order of work across listings, advertising, stock, cash and new markets, and to keep that order sensible as the business changes. In many brands that job falls to the founder, who is also handling supplier calls, customer issues and hiring. The result is growth in whichever direction the last problem pulled.

A part-time lead brings structure to those decisions. They run a quarterly planning cycle, hold the monthly review, and keep a record of each decision and the trigger that would change it. The lead works with the people who run the daily tasks rather than replacing them.

Sequencing new markets

Expanding to another marketplace or country is one of the most common growth moves, and one of the easiest to rush. Each new market needs listings, pricing, customer handling, returns and often separate stock. A market added before the team can serve it dilutes attention from the markets that already work.

We test each market against your current stock depth, team capacity and cash position. The growth plan records the conditions for opening a market, such as a minimum stock cover on the core range, a named owner for the new listings and a budget envelope. When those conditions are met, the market is added. When they are not, the plan says why and when to look again.

Choosing not to open a market is a legitimate result of the plan. A brand that spends its stock and cash on a new country before its core range is secure can lose money in both places. The lead writes down the reason for each delay so the decision can be revisited with new facts.

What the lead owns

Each area is agreed in the scope before the lead starts.

  • Quarterly plan

Goals, product focus and the sequence of work, written as one document the team can follow.

  • Market sequence

The order of new markets and the conditions that must be true before each one opens.

  • Spend guardrails

The advertising envelope and the rules for moving budget when stock or margin changes.

  • Kill or keep reviews

Products and listings that no longer earn their place are reviewed on a schedule.

  • Board-ready reporting

A one-page view of stock, cash, margin and growth for owners or investors.

  • Team cadence

Monthly reviews with agreed agendas, owners and a short written outcome.

How a lead hands over

The aim is that your team can run the growth process without the lead within a few months. The plan, the trigger list and the review template are written so a capable operator can pick them up. We agree the handover milestones in advance and check them at each review.

Some brands keep a growth lead for longer because the market keeps changing. Others move the role in-house once the cycle is stable. We plan for either and say which we think is more likely for your business.

Handover also means the decision log is complete. Every choice made during the engagement sits next to its reason and its review date, so the next person does not have to reconstruct the history from email.

How the first quarter runs

  1. Read the business

Stock, cash, margin, current markets and the team's capacity reviewed in one pass.

  2. Write the quarter

The first plan sets the focus, the sequence and the triggers, reviewed with you before it is final.

  3. Run the monthly review

Results compared with the plan, and decisions recorded with their reasons.

  4. Adjust with agreement

The sequence changes only through a written decision, not through a rushed call.

Questions about a growth lead

How is this different from a full-time hire?

A part-time lead brings a defined scope and a shorter commitment. A full-time hire can carry more day-to-day work. We are happy to help you think through which one fits.

How much of my time does it take?

Less than you might expect, because the process is written down. We agree the monthly meeting and the document load in the scope, so it is visible before you commit.

Can the lead work with our agency?

Yes. The lead can set priorities for the agency and review its output against the plan. If the agency is doing work the plan does not support, we will say so.

What if the plan is wrong?

Then it changes, in writing. The purpose of the monthly review is to find that out early and change course on the evidence.
